I want to know which is the most scenic route through the mountains from the Yosemite area to lake Tahoe?

There are three different routes that are marked as scenic. I just want to know which is the best. We'll be traveling in mid-June, so snow won't be a problem.

If you're in a hurry take the eastern route to US 395.





Rt 49 is the most interesting, historic, and beautiful. I pre-read some articles and books about Ghost Towns and the California Gold Rush beforehand but it's not necessary.





I have followed rt 49 to Placerville and then east on US 50. and on a different trip to I-80 then east to Truckee. Both routes are fine. Truckee is a place to visit if you are staying on at Lake Tahoe.





Next time I will take rt 4 NE from Angels Camp. Make sure you stop at Jamestown...RR museum.





Stay away from Fresno. It's "the pits."
Reply:I would take the road east over the mountains to Lee Vining, then up 395, but then I like remote places. I usually avoid Yosemite because it's too crowded!
Reply:I don't know if it is the "most" scenic, but since I like little towns, history, and gold, I would head west out of Yosemite on Rt 140 to Mariposa, then north on Rt 49, the "golden trail" to at least Placerville, then from there up to Sierraville north of Tahoe, take any route to the lake, depending on when you get tired of Rt. 49.
