When should I seed and fertilize my lawn?

It's October and I don't know what I should do to make sure my lawn comes back after winter. The sod was placed both in June and in late September but I don't know how to seed it or how to fertilize it properly because I've never lived in a place with a real winter season (snow!) Some areas of the grass is turning brown, but other areas are super green.

When should I seed and fertilize my lawn?
It depends on the type of lawn. Most lawns rebound after harsh climates, frosts, heat etc. personally i have found with santa anna couch grass, the best time to fertilize is early spring. but before fertilizing, if you want the perfect lawn, you must scarify (Cut right back), dethatch (remove the horizontal runners above the surface), core (a machine that puts small holes in the lawn to allow water and nutrients right to the roots), followed up with a top dress of a clean sandy loam and fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. water every day and within 1-2 weeks it will be magic. same process will work with pretty much all creeping lawns.
Reply:Scotts 2 + 2. It is higher of nigrogen for the uncoming cold winter and go to sleep when it snows. It also kills the weeds from the winter rains and before spring. Spring you want Scotts turf builder. Be carefull not too much nigrogen when stopping or overlaping with the spreader or you will burn it.
Reply:Sounds like you have a hybrid bermuda grass. It will go dormant during the cold season. If It is bermuda you shoud not fertilize in winter...However you need to use "winterizer for grass" This will help the root system of your grass so that it will look good when spring times comes around. Ask for it at your nearby nursery store be sure to take a clump of grass and ask them what kind of grass do I have.

If you have cool season grass such as kentucky blue grass or fescue then it needs to be fertilized once per month during the cold season months. And you should also use "winterizer" in early winter.

You should use perennial rye for over seeding bermuda grass. Since bermuda goes dormant in winter the rye will look green in the winter...giving you that year round green grass look. No need to overseed winter type grass unless you use the same type of grass for bare spots.
Reply:Use seed and fertilizer/food together. The "er" months are (September-December) the best time to plant grass and water it, in the Mid-west. (Obviously don't water if your sprinkler will freeze.) Grass flourishes in cool moist conditions. Also, grass is hardy, it will come back nice and green in spring. Once the winter has broke, start back up with the seed and fertilizer/food. You'll have an awesome lawn. Your local lawn and garden center can help you determine the best seed and food for your region and the time of year. Good luck!
