today, June 11, 2008 it snowed 4 inches of snow. We had a power outage for three hours. After it snowed it warmed up and the slush on the branches of the trees cracked the branches off. My tree outside my window has droopy branches with three of them broken clear off! Does if have a chance of surviving? If so, what should I do to keep it alive? Sat. it will be 79 degrees F. I AM NOT KIDDING!
Ok NO JOKE! It snowed in Montana.?
Ah, June in the North Country! I grew up in Michigan, so I understand the whole "snow in June" problem - rare but it happens.
Well, the dropped branches are gone. The tree should recover, though the broken branches will impair the appearance a little. You can sometimes reach up or over and use a broom handle to gently push some of the snow off the sides of the branches, starting with the lowest ones, but that is a little tricky and if they start to fall with you under the tree, you could be injured. So most folks just keep their fingers crossed. One night in an ice storm down here in Virginia, we started to hear what sounded like gun shots but it was the neighbors pine tree - the limbs were snapping off and dropping 20 feet and more down onto his boat! We knew they were not home and wanted to save the boat from further damage, but those limbs were huge and heavy so it was too dangerous to get close enough to move it - it had to stay there and take the beating.
Reply:I grew up and spent a good portion of my adult life in NW Montana, so you don't have to convince me it snowed yesterday. One reason I now live in Central America. When it warms up and drys up trim the broken branches on your tree and it should be fine.
Reply:thats amazing. i think it will survive if it has suvived past winters. it may be gone, but this isnt the first time montanas had a cold spell and it wont be the last. see what happens this summer it may recover. if not wait till next summer and see if it comes back
Reply:Here in Colorado we have a saying "If you don't like the weather stick around 5 min and it will change".
As for your tree, yes it should be ok.I would of course trim the broken branches.
My Best
