Questions about australian weather?

im just curius since summer is going on for australians now do they get summer break now or do they get it in june.


another thing, do they celebrate christmas on dec. 25th? and does it snow when its winter there?


how cold do the winters get?

In Australia, the school year starts at the end of January. It ends just before Christmas. In between there is just over a month off, through Summer.





Depending on where you live, it's hot all year round (Queensland, Northern Territory, or north Western Australia) but it can be quite cool and temperate in the south.





It snows in Victoria and Tasmania. An average winter day at sea level in the south would be about 5-10 degrees celsius. We celebrate Christmas the same time everyone else does, December 25th.

We don't have a big long break like you guys do. We have 6 weeks over Xmas (%26amp; yes, we do celebrate Xmas on 25 Dec) %26amp; then 2 weeks in spring, 2 in autumn (that's fall to all the americans) %26amp; then another 2 in winter. That is for school kids. Universities have longer breaks %26amp; now I work I get 4 weeks off per year that I can take whenever I like as long as my employer is OK %26amp; can get a replacement for the time.





It snows in some places.....just like it does in the US.....but not in others....just like in the US.

Yes, we get summer break now for around 6 or 7 weeks for most students. We don't get it in June.





Winter...there is no snow unless you live in high altitude areas (and even there, snow is very rare). It's usually just several drizzles of rain or none at all. Temperatures in Winter average around 15 to 20 degrees Celcius.





Summers are scorchers. Mid 30s to even 40s at times.

It snows in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania in the winter, enough to have a ski industry and snow has been recorded in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia on occasion.

International festivals such as Christmas, Easter and the Queen's Birthday are celebrated on the same days as the rest of the world.
Reply:Christmas is celebrated on Dec. 25th, but most people don't have turkey and ham and plum pudding and all the trimmings. Too hot to be slaving over a hot stove. They exchange pressies though. It is summer then, so schools get summer holidays. Temperatures can be up over 40 degrees C. Mad hot all day and thunderstorms at night. Pavements too hot to walk on.





Winter there in June and July is like a nice late Spring or early summer here (Ireland). Nights can feel a bit chilly, but frost is seldom, and by midday the sun is feeling pretty hot. Many Australians don't own a coat. Don't need one.





They are nearer the equator than we are, so they don't have our long summer days or winter nights. All year round, it takes about half an hour from dark to light, and the same again when the sun goes down. Full daylight by 7 am, getting dark again about 6.30 pm. Very little difference between length of summer and wnter days.

3. In winter snow is permanent enough for skiing in the southern mountains, but not extensive. It can snow in places in spring and even in early summer (our summer). People have been snowed in, in the Tasmanian highlands. Various places have had snow on Christmas Day. It melts pretty quickly though, sometimes not even settling.


4. Coldest Place : -23 degrees centigrade (Charlotte Pass, New South Wales). But normally no colder than -15C overnight.


The Northern Tablelands (NSW) have the most frosts per year, 200 days in a good (bad?) year.


Winter in the North is a bit of a joke, a cold night is 18C with temps normally 20C o'nite to 27C during the day.
Reply:OK, well most people get a summer break now, like school and stuff, we get the biggest break now, along with three smaller ones through the year.





and yes of course we celebrate Christmas on the 25th, and some (including my family) do have roast dinners and stuff even though it is really hot usually.





and it does snow in winter in some parts of Australia, up north it doesn't of course but down South-in lower New South Wales and Victoria it does snow, and once again it depends on the place your are to how cold it gets, but i don't know how to compare it to how cold it gets where ever you are.

Reply:I was there a few weeks ago and my sis works there. The weaither was snowy and the airplane was delayed. Its probably even colder now. Make sure to take jackets if you go. Extremely cold. I guess they do celebrate on the same day as anyone else.
