Stage 4 Colon Cancer Treatments-?

My grandpa was very very recently diagosed with colon cancer. He is 73 years, and has never been sick a day in his life. He never smoked, never drank, married his high school sweetheart and has been married for 54 years. He dug his car out of 2 feet of snow on the day we got the surprise diagnosis. So a pretty hardcore sort of guy. I was wondering if anybody whose family or somebody they know has ever chosen not to undergo chemotherepy. His cancer has spread throughout his liver and his lymph nodes and he is on a colonostmy indefinitely now.








Would chemotherepy really prolong his life long enough to make battling the numerous negative side effects of cancer worth it?? I will be gone the entire month of June since I bought a 1700$ nonrefundable plane ticket before this all happened, so I am very very very scared that something will happen while I am gone. Thank you very much.





If anybody has any experiences with this, I would very much appriciate hearing his story.

Stage 4 Colon Cancer Treatments-?
It sounds like your grandpa is healthy otherwise and feeling well except for having to adjust to a colostomy. Chemo may help prolong his life, but the other important purpose is to improve how he feels and his quality of life.





Some of the medical oncologists I work with don't feel it's necessary to start treating with chemotherapy until someone starts feeling badly because of the side effects that go with treatment, but it depends upon what your grandpa wants. As for when he may feel worse, it's not easy to say because some people it goes fast while I've seen other people doing OK 1-2 years later. My grandmother died of colon cancer, but she was much older and more frail. Despite that, she lived for several months without chemotherapy.





My guess is he would want you to enjoy your trip, but talk to him and your family about what is best for him and you. My best wishes for you and your family.
