What do you do to beat the winter blues???

I hate the winter and the springs here are just like winters so basically its cold and snows till june so what do i do for the next 3 months to get rids of the winter blues or blahs whatever you want to call them.

What do you do to beat the winter blues???
Hello !I think almost everyone gets the winter blues, you just have them longer then most. What my family and I do to help beat the winter blues, is:start planning a summer get away, if even for a couples of days, all the details, especially where. We put brighter light bulbs in a few of the lights and turn them on, even on cloudy dark days, it does help to cheer you up some, if its not snowing or raining,we have a BBQ , and if it is, an indoor picnic is nice. We have family night in the living room once a week, I turn the couch and chairs around, like in a car at a drive-in,pop popcorn, and we watch a movie together.Turn the heat up alittle, just warm enough that you have to run around the house in shorts and I keep plants and flowers around so it don't feel like winter, even fake ones will work. These are just a few things that we do. I hope it helps !

Reply:The winter blues as you and so many others describe them as are when our mood appears to change systematically aligning us with the weather.

eg: gray gloomy day = gray gloomy mood

It is indeed a recognised condition and goes by the name SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) the good news is that it is easy to help lift your winter gloom...

Serotonin - not many people know about it but it is essential in our body creating it's own sense of well being and fighting depression. The retina's in our eyes absorb this from the sun and it has been added in an articial form to a number of antidepressents ie: prozac.

Have you ever noticed that when you enter a clean uncluttered room that is full of natural light, you have a feeling of wellness or how a visit to the beach can uplift your mood for even a few days? This internal smile as I call it is the serotonin levels in your body rising.

Ok so now we know why we get gloomy... how do we fix it?

Well there is plenty of data proving that the use of light boxes within your home can decrease the bodies production of melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy at night) and increases the production of seretonin boosting your energy levels.

Hope this helps...
Reply:Oh you must be from Erie, PA. LOL Do what I did and move to coastal California.
Reply:so long is the winter there? goodness. I take lot of hot soup, wear my fancy warm cloths, use heater and most of the time sleep inside my cosy warm bed!
Reply:Change Hemispheres for 2 months in the midst of winter
Reply:You may have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), where the brain has a low level of serotonin and norepenephrine furing the Winter due to less sunlight during that season. Some suggestions: get a mental health professional assessment, expose yourself to light--any kind, get a physical, try vitamin D...but these are only suggestions. I would seek professional help first. I feel for you, and please know my thoughts are with you.
