cave while climbing? I climbed Mt. Hood once, but it was in June.
Here in Oregon, 3 mountain climbers died on Mt. Hood. Has anyone on this site ever had to survive in a snow?
I've been stuck in the snow on mountains a few times but as this was a possibility from the outset we were prepared with the necessary food and equipment.
We once had to sit out a snow storm for 3 days in a snow hole that we'd dug. Apart from making the snow hole bigger there wasn't anything else to do. When we eventually left we'd dug a virtual hotel into the snow with several rooms and tunnels connecting them.
On another occasion we spent 27 days in a remote cabin although we weren't exactly stuck or fending for survival. The nearest village was only 20 miles away and we could have walked there in a day. The problem was that the car was stuck on a forest road 15 miles off the main road and we had to wait for the snow to melt enough so we could get the car out - at it's peak the snow covered the track by about 12 feet.
We've been storm bound several times but a basic snow hole only takes a matter of minutes to dig and as we've had enough food and fuel to see us through it's never been a survival situation as such.
Sorry I couldn't give you anything more exciting.
Reply:I have never been mountain climbing but I did get caught in a snowstorm once while traveling on the interstate. It was dreadful. It took about 7 hours to drive from Nashville to Louisville, Kentucky. I passed a half dozen truckers going the opposite direction...other than that....nada. And yes, I did pull over at every exit with a possibility of lodging. The only empty room was in Louisville so it was drive or sleep in a truck stop. I wish I'd opted for the truck stop. One of the worst nights of my life.
